Police seize 20,000 fake schoolbooks

WASSAYOS NGAMKHAM

Economic crime police raided a house in Udon Thani province yesterday and seized at least 20,000 fake school textbooks worth about 1.7 million baht. The caretaker of the house, Thanachart Phuttawandee, 50, was taken in for questioning.

The fake school textbooks were for Prathom Suksa 1 to Prathom Suksa 6 (grades 1-6). The house is near Nong Samrong Witthaya school in Udon Thani's Muang district.

Arrest warrants have been issued for three alleged leading members of the fake textbook racket.

Pol Maj-Gen Wisut Wanichbutr, commander of the Economic and Technology-related Crime Suppression Division, said yesterday's arrest and seizure followed Friday's raid on Asia Pacific Offset Co in Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district, where investigators found evidence implicating three people in the production of fake school textbooks.

The suspects facing arrest warrants are Premkamol Thinnakorn na Ayutthaya, 51, an executive of the firm, Voraphan Thastiya, 41, an executive of a printing plate factory at Soi Rangnam in Bangkok's Phaya Thai area, and a woman identified only as Jae Pen, an alleged mastermind behind the racket.

The printing plate factory also uses the name Asia Pacific Offset.

Jae Pen had allegedly ordered Mr Voraphan to produce fake school textbooks and supply shops in the Northeast, said Pol Maj-Gen Wisut.

The three suspects, wanted on copyright violation charges, face a maximum penalty of four years in jail and/or a fine of 800,000 baht if found guilty.

The suspects, who are still at large, have three days to surrender to police

I'm surprised not only about the police minding copyright violations all of a sudden but even more that there seems to be business in copying schoolbooks for sale. Schoolbooks should be subsidized by the government.

And I wonder what the cops did with those fake textbooks then:

- use for their own kids

- sell themselves for money

- give to needy kids for free, or even

- burn them?
