VOLLEYBALL / WOMEN'S JUNIOR

Ukraine spoil Thailand's ranking

KITTIPONG THONGSOMBAT

Thailand's hopes of finishing fifth were dashed after losing 0-3 to Ukraine in the 14th World Women's Junior Volleyball Championship yesterday. Thailand who are playing in the classification 5-8 matches failed to live up to their previous performances and lost 14-25, 23-25, 17-25 in front of their 4,500 fans at the MCC Hall at The Mall, Nakhon Ratchasima.

The local team will be looking for seventh place today when they will take on Germany whom they beat 3-1 in the first round.

''I am very sorry for the fans. Our players did not play as planned. They did not do well in receiving the ball. One important thing is that we lack a good team leader able to motivate the players,'' disappointed Thai coach Banjong Sombat said, adding they would try to beat Germany as a consolation for the fans. Thailand's best performance came in 2003 in Suphanburi where they finished ninth.

Five-times champions Brazil are upbeat for today's final match against Asian champion China after they each took a very easy win in the semi-finals. Brazil thrashed the US 25-14, 25-19, 25-15 while China beat Japan 25-21, 25-15, 25-15.

Moura Luizomar, Brazil coach, said that his team were fully fit for the tournament after three months' preparation. However, they would not underestimate China.

Brazil beat China in style

KITTIPONG THONGSOMBAT

Powerhouse Brazil showed their class and put on an impressive display beating China 3-1 and bringing home the sixth winner's trophy of the 14th Women's Junior World Volleyball in Nakhon Ratchasima.

In yesterday's final match, Brazil who beat Asian champion China in the 2003 final in Bangkok, took one hour and 46 minutes to see off China 25-22, 24-26, 26-24, 25-14.

It is the fourth consecutive championship and the sixth in total for Brazil who already clinched the world titles in 1987, 1989, 2001, 2003 and 2005. Additonally, they finished as runners-up in 1991, 1995 and 1999.

China who together with Brazil had participated in all the 14 tournaments, claimed the trophy in 1995.

Thailand were beaten 25-27, 10-25, 10-25, 25-22, 23-25 by Germany to finish eighth in the 12-team compettition. It was sweet revenge for Germany after losting to the local team in the first round.

Banjong Sombat said that despite a defeat, he was proud of his players who have been trying their best all tournament.

"I am satisfied with the targeted eighth place. The players gain vast experience playing with the bigger and taller opponents.

"We have some room for improvement especially receiving a ball."

Nevertheless, it is the best performance for the Thai team since finishing ninth in 2003 and 1995 when Thailand hosted the event.

Asian runner-up Japan took third place, edging the USA 25-16, 14-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-23.

Fifth place went to Italy who came back from one set behind to beat Ukraine 3-1. Croatia who went down to Puerto Rico 1-3 despite taking the first set, took ninth place.

Egypt failed to register their first win in the tournament. They were trounced 3-0 by the Dominican Republic in the play-off for 11th place.
