:spin

Ungelesener Beitragvon KoratCat » Mi Jul 13, 2011 5:59 pm

BANGKOK, July 13 (Reuters) - The Bank of Thailand raised its benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a point to 3.25 percent on Wednesday and signalled further tightening to come to tame inflationary pressures as a new government moves to boost growth and increase wages.

The central bank expressed caution over potential inflation after the July 3 election victory of the opposition Puea Thai Party led by businesswoman Yingluck Shinawatra, whose campaign promises included a big increase in the minimum wage.

"Measures such as the prospective increases in the minimum wage and fiscal spending amid continued economic growth will likely add to inflationary pressure and may result in heightened inflation expectations," the central bank said in a statement.

The rise in borrowing costs by one of Asia's most hawkish central banks follows China's tightening last week for the third time this year as the region battles price pressures.

The Bank of Thailand repeated that core inflation could at some point this year breach the upper end of its target range of 0.5-3.0 percent.

"Government subsidies may ease inflation figures but there is still a chance that core inflation will go above the target range," Asssistant Governor Paiboon Kittisrikangwan told a news conference.

"On the government's policy, we cannot say anything much at the moment. We will have to wait for clarity as the government has not been formed yet. We will wait to see when and how those policies will be implemented as well as funding," he added.

Usara Wilaipich, senior economist at Standard Chartered Bank in Bangkok, expected one more rate rise to 3.5 percent this year

"Overall, the Bank of Thailand's statement remains hawkish, highlighting that the populist policies may heighten inflation expectations," she said.

The baht edged up after the increase to 30.24/27 per dollar compared with 30.27/31 shortly before.

Bond yields <0#THBMK=> were steady, with the five-year yield up 1 basis point at 3.93 percent. The stock market was up 1.4 percent in late trade, having been up 1.1 percent at midsession when the decision was announced.

ONE YEAR OF TIGHTENING

The central bank started tightening in July last year to "normalise" the policy rate -- cut to a record low 1.25 percent during the global financial crisis -- as growth picked up.

"The Thai economy is expected to grow further in the second half due to increased domestic demand, consumption and investment," Paiboon said. The central bank has forecast growth of 4.1 percent this year. It will update its forecasts next week.

All 18 economists in a Reuters poll had expected the one-day repurchase rate to rise by a quarter of a point to 3.25 percent. .

They expected the rate to reach 3.50 percent by year-end. In a more limited poll conducted after the general election on July 3, the median end-year forecast was 3.75 percent.

"We see risks of them moving again in August. But we believe the central bank is close to neutral rates, especially after today's rate hike," said Rahul Bajoria, an economist at Barclays Capital in Singapore.

POPULIST PLEDGES

Yingluck's party pledged a range of populist measures during its campaign, from big wage rises to infrastructure projects. .

Economists have warned of a wage-price spiral if they follow through on every promise. Yingluck told Reuters her policies might increase inflation a bit but she said she would be willing to drop some if they were unworkable.

She has promised to increase the daily minimum wage to 300 baht ($9.90) nationwide from January, between 35 and 90 percent above the present minimum set in each province.

Other pledges include raising the starting monthly salary for new university graduates in government jobs and state enterprises to 15,000 baht ($495) from 10,640 baht.

Inflation is already accelerating. Core inflation, which excludes energy and fresh food, hit 2.55 percent in June, the highest level since September 2008.

The headline rate was 4.06 percent in June after a 32-month high of 4.19 percent in May. Government price controls and subsidies on fuel, public transport and some utilities have helped hold it down.
