Poll: Most people overspend earnings

Most Thai adults are at high risk of financial strife because they spend more money than they can afford to, according to the results of an Abac Poll released on Friday.

The poll was conduct from Aug 15-Sept 30 and involved 2,764 people aged 18 years or older in 12 provinces - Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Chon Buri, Nakhon Ratchasima, Udon Thani, Kalasin, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Nakhon Sawan, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phuket and Songkhla.

The survey found that the average income of the people polled was 11,300 baht per month and their personal expenses each month averaged 9,197.99 baht.

This meant most of them were at continual risk of bankruptcy. They had to resort to off-system loans for other expenses because their regular expenditure was more than 80 per cent of their monthly income, the Abac Poll centre reported.

Their average monthly expense was 5,222.22 baht for food, followed by 3,789.90 baht for daily transportation, and 1,416.67 baht for entertainment such as movies, concerts and sports.

Of more concern was the finding that those earning between 3,0001-5,000 baht per month had a total monthly expenditure of 6,522.04 baht on average. The number of the samplings in this income bracket constituted one-fourth of the people polled.

Moreover, people earning 5,001-10,000 baht per month had average monthly expenses of 7,533.75 baht.

The great majority, 76 per cent, of those polled earned less than 15,000 baht per month.

Of the people in this income bracket, 75.6 per cent had no savings.
