Gasohol on the rise (E 10 to E 20)

For everything related to energy etc., how to save energy and how to make better use of it. Or what the Thai and Korat authorities do to make energy supply more efficient. Which alternatives to the use of electricity and oil out here in Isaan exist etc.

Thailand to double ethanol content in petrol

BANGKOK: Thailand, the world's second biggest sugar exporter, plans to double the ethanol content in petroleum next year to lower import bills and domestic fuel prices.

Most gas stations in Thailand would start selling petrol with 20% ethanol, or so-called E20, early next year, Deputy Prime Minister Kosit Panpiemras said in an interview.

PTT Pcl, Royal Dutch Shell Plc and other oil companies currently sold petrol with 10% ethanol, he said.

Thailand, which imports almost all of its crude, has promoted the use of ethanol and palm oil in motor vehicle fuel to reduce reliance on crude oil as futures trade near US$100 a barrel.

“This government has pushed very hard to promote the use of gasohol,'' or petroleum blended with ethanol, Kosit said. “We have a serious long-term plan for this alternative fuel to cut crude oil imports.''

The country's crude and fuel imports in the first nine months this year fell 3.7% to US$18.5bil as consumption of gasohol increased, according to the commerce ministry data. – Bloomberg

Lack of ethanol education

"When they drive into stations, the motorists, whose cars are normally filled with gasohol E10, mostly think E20 also fits their vehicles, though it definitely does not." - Chairman Tiraphot Vajrabhaya, Shell Thailand

Shell Thailand chairman Tiraphot Vajrabhaya of Shell Thailand is concerned that government education of motorists has been so poor that they might not understand the difference between E10 and E20 gasohol fuels - the second of which can be used only in specially designed engines.

If the government overlooks the problem, the situation could affect alternative fuel development in Thailand.

A recent customer survey by Shell found that most motorists did not understand that gasohol E10 and E20 were very different products.

"They have no idea. When they drive into stations, the motorists, whose cars are normally filled with gasohol E10, mostly think E20 also fits their vehicles, though it definitely does not," Mr Tiraphot said.

"If their engines are damaged, they may blame all gasohol products, which could harm people's trust in alternative fuel as a whole, and efforts by the state will have been a waste of time."

E20 has double the ethanol content of E10 and requires specially designed engines. Alcohol-based fuels can damage normal engines by drying gaskets and increasing engine wear.

Since its launch this year, the new fuel has been unexpectedly popular due to its cheaper price. Gasohol E20 is six baht a litre cheaper than premium fuel, and drivers can save up to 300 baht each time they fill a 50-litre tank.

The government has been trying to support wider adoption of E20 through the state Oil Fund, which subsidises the fuel at a rate of 0.30 baht per litre, and does not collect the levies imposed on other types of motor fuel.

Currently, only PTT, the state-run petrol market leader and Bangchak Petroleum sell gasohol E20 at their stations.

Shell plans to start selling E20 in the second quarter due to strong growth in market demand, and brisk sales of E10. Shell's premium E10 has been replacing as much as 65% of total premium petrol sales and the figure is expected to rise to 80% in the next three months.

According to Yodphot Wongrukmit executive vice-president for retail marketing at Bangchak Petroleum, the company has made it a priority to raise public awareness about E20.

He said the average daily sales of gasohol E20 stood at 5,000 litres or 150,000 litres for its first month of operation through its 10 stations that offer E20.

Chaivat Chooritti, a senior executive vice-president of PTT, said it aimed to have 25 stations selling E20 by the end of this month, up from 15 now.
