Paedophile suspect dead in suicide

(dpa) - A German national charged with raping a minor in Thailand was found dead in his prison cell in what was believed to be a suicide, police said Thursday.

The body of Helmut Nehls, 64, was found Wednesday at a prison in the northeastern city of Udon Thani with his wrists slashed and a sock stuffed down his throat, police Captain Jirapong Singhasuriya said.

He was believed to have died from suffocation, rather than loss of blood because the slashes to his wrists, inflicted with the jagged edge of a toilet bowl, were not deep, police said.

"We are sure this was a suicide because no one could get in to his cell, and the key to his cell was with the supervisor, not the lower officers," Jirapong said.

"Nehls had requested a solitary cell because he was suffering stress and was being bothered by the other prisoners," Jirapong added in a telephone interview with Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Thai police arrested Nehls, who is from Zeppernick in the eastern German state of Sachsen-Anhalt, on Feby 10 on charges of raping and abducting a minor. He was arrested in a rented house in Udon Thani, 450 kilometres north-east of Bangkok, with a 12-year-old girl.

Police found pornographic videos and a digital movie camera containing a clip of the young girl doing a strip tease.

If he had been found guilty of raping a minor, Nehls faced 10 to 20 years in prison.

Nehls, a former computer technician, had been visiting Thailand on a regular basis for the past 15 years and was fluent in the language, police said.

Britons, American arrested in Thai paedophile raid

BANGKOK – Thai police charged one Briton of raping an underage girl and another of attempted rape of a girl under 15, investigators said on Monday.

They said an American and a Finn were also charged with sex offences with underage girls in the eastern beach resort town of Pattaya, notorious for its sex tourism industry.

All four were charged with sexual molestation of children aged under 15, police said in a statement. They face up to 15 years in jail if convicted.

Londoner Stephen James E., 54, was charged with raping a girl under the age of 15. He faces up to 20 years' jail if found guilty.

Maurice John P., 76, also from London, was charged with attempting to rape a girl aged under 15 in Pattaya, a small fishing village until used for 'rest and recreation' by American servicemen during the Vietnam War.

American Glenn Richard A., 60, from Seattle and Ilkka Y., 63, from Finland, were charged with molestation.

The two Londoners had pornographic photos and VCDs they recorded with girls

Advertising beforehand . . .

Ungelesener Beitragvon Isaan Rollie » Mi Aug 20, 2008 8:18 am

LOS ANGELES — A Santa Barbara man is charged with advertising on Craigslist for a guide who would help him find children to have sex with in Thailand.

Michael Patrick Mahoney had his bond set at $100,000 Monday in federal court in Los Angeles. He was arrested Saturday by federal agents at Los Angeles International Airport after he boarded a flight for Bangkok. He was carrying children's stuffed animals, Disneyland shirts and chocolates.

The 51-year-old faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of a child sex tourism charge.

The investigation into Mahoney began last week after immigration officials noticed his ad on the Craigslist Web site.

Officials say an undercover agent posed as a travel guide and sent an e-mail offering to arrange meetings with children.

I bet his lawyer can get him a hefty discount for advertising beforehand what he was up to.

The thread title says that there's a clap down but is that correct? In addition to the cases quoted, two fugitive paedophiles have been found in Korat in recent months but is this evidence of a clamp down? It's more likely to be either coincidence or a sign that paedophiles think it's acceptable in Thailand.

This particular form of child abuse is not diminished by the sniggering jokes that hide behind public outrage. Until people realise the lasting emotional and, in some cases, physical, damage that child abuse does, there will always be those who think that there's not much wrong with it. When I read recently a comment by a self-acclaimed intellectual that the drive of a paedophile was little different from that of an adulterer, meaning a bit of sexual naughtiness, I wondered if innocent children had much chance in this world.

Why don't you read the title as a request? KC can add an exclamation mark to make it clear.

There is no comparing of adultery to child molestation. Why not compare rapism to child molestation?

Of course! I hope you don't think that it was I who suggested there is.
