How to groom law students

A rule is a rule and should be applied no matter where you are and what you are doing. Law students at Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University may have forgotten this, but their teacher, Pattacharin Witthaya-aneknant, hadn’t.

Last Monday Ms Pattacharin was the subject of a complaint by her colleague, Samart Chubchon, over alleged abuse of authority. The complaint was lodged on Sept 26 when Ms Pattacharin went into Room 9.10.11 at the faculty of humanities and social sciences while students were doing an exam on the Introduction to Civil Law. She had a pair of scissors in her hand.

Ms Pattacharin did not ask for permission from the supervisor or another colleague overseeing the exam and started cutting one student’s hair. She gave 13 students an unwanted haircut. The room descended into chaos because of her actions, according to Mr Samart’s complaint to university rector Sawanit Saonanont.

Mr Samart demanded disciplinary action against Ms Pattacharin for causing embarrassment to the students and acting in a manner that was inappropriate and against teachers’ ethics.

One day after the complaint reached the rector’s office, a fact-finding committee was set up to interview all those involved, including Ms Pattacharin and the students who had their hair cut. The rector promised fairness and said those found guilty would not be protected.

Ms Pattacharin defended herself by claiming that all students at the faculty had been told in writing and spoken to about keeping a proper hairstyle. This has been a rule of the faculty for 10 years, she added. Taking care of their looks and hair would give them discipline and make them credible, good lawyers after graduation, she added. The committee is mulling its decision
