Doi Suthep needs urgent restoration
(BangkokPost.com) - The Fine Arts Department under the Ministry of Culture called on Prime Minister and Defence Minister Somchai Wongsawat to urgently restore the deteriorated Doi Suthep Pagoda in Phra That Doi Suthep temple in Chiang Mai province.
Continuous rainfall caused more moisture inside the pagoda, according to Chiang Mai Provincial Fine Arts Office director Sahawat Naenna. He said the high level of moisture could seep into the pagoda and ruin the holy relic, adding that the structure could collapse, if it holds too much water.
The Fine Arts Department together with Chiang Mai University's Engineering Faculty inspected into the relic's structural. The team comprised archaeologists and experts in civil engineering and structural weight dispersal. They examined the holy relic’s moisture level, and the result revealed that its exterior was softened similar to pieces of clay.
Prime Minister Somchai is scheduled to visit the northern province of Chiang Mai on October 1.>>>>>>>
