Police in Thailand searching for 36 escaped crocodiles

BANGKOK, Thailand: Police armed with assault rifles searched for 36 crocodiles that escaped from a farm in northeastern Thailand when their pens were flooded after heavy rains, an official said Friday.

Search parties shot and killed eight of the animals as they slithered through the flooded district Friday morning, said Chin Konjohor, chief of the area's municipal office. Police and village volunteers have been scouring the Nonsoong district of Nakhon Ratchasima province by boat, day and night, since the crocodiles escaped on Tuesday, he said.

Chin said nighttime searches were often the most successful because crocodiles eyes glowed in the dark.

Heavy rains have inundated several northeastern provinces for days. Parts of Nakhon Ratchasima province, about 210 kilometers (130 miles) north of Bangkok, were among the hardest hit.

"The entire town is under water," Chin said. "We're working hard to catch the crocodiles before they bite someone."

Crocodiles are farmed in Thailand for their skin and meat, much of which is exported for use by European fashion designers and restaurants in China.

Thai marksmen hunt 11 crocodiles that escaped from flooded farm

BANGKOK, Thailand: Shotgun-toting marksmen cruised the rivers of northeastern Thailand on Sunday hunting for 11 crocodiles that slithered away from a flooded farm.

A total of 34 crocodiles escaped in the Non Sung district of Nakorn Ratchasima province on Wednesday after floodwaters inundated a commercial farm which raises the reptiles for their meat and skins, said Suwira Phonkoh, an official in the province's special task force to help flood victims.

Twenty-three crocodiles were later shot dead. The remaining 11 — some as big as six meters (20 feet) — were still at large Sunday and authorities said capturing them was proving increasingly difficult. Animal experts from a Bangkok zoo have been called in to help in the search.

"The area is huge and the big crocodiles are more skillful and they can dive longer than small ones," Suwira said.

Thousands of houses in Nakorn Ratchasima have been inundated with floodwater since last week because of heavy rainfall and many people have been evacuated.

Authorities have warned the remaining residents to be on the lookout for the crocodiles.

Traps baited for escaped crocs . . .

Nakhon Ratchasima _ Hunters are baiting traps with chicken meat in hopes of capturing several large, hungry crocodiles which swam to freedom from a flooded farm in the district of Non Sung. One fierce croc, estimated to weigh 200 kilogrammes, charged at hunters when it saw their boat yesterday. They shot at the croc and it fled.

''I guess it's so hungry that it dared to attack us directly,'' said Chin Khojoho, head of the Prasat Tong tambon administration organisation (TAO).

Local people have teamed up with crocodile experts from Bangkok and staff from Nakhon Ratchasima zoo in an effort to catch the 36 crocodiles which escaped on Oct 17. By last night, 25 of them had been caught _ 15 alive and 10 dead. Meat from the dead animals was distributed to the villagers, officials said.

Yesterday, zoo staff used chicken meat, hoping to lure the creatures into a trap, said Mr Chin. The effort will continue throughout today and tonight.

Experts warned people in the area to be wary of the remaining crocodiles because they had not eaten for days and could be dangerous.
