Inflation

For everything that can help us understand Thailand's "climate" like culture, customs, habits and beliefs of the native population of Siam. Anything else useful for travel and emigration to Thailand, immigration laws, visas etc. is welcome too.

Thailand August consumer prices up 1.1 pct on yr; lowest rise in nearly 5 yrs

BANGKOK (Thomson Financial) - Consumer prices in Thailand last month rose just 1.1 percent from a year ago, the lowest gain in nearly five years, the Commerce Ministry said Monday.

It attributed the modest rise to weaker fuel prices, with the cost of oil down 5.2 percent. Overall energy costs were down 4.5 percent,

In July consumer prices rose an annual 1.7 percent.

'Manufacturers have not raised prices for goods amid an economic slowdown,' Karun Kittisathaporn, the ministry's permanent secretary, told reporters.

The ministry will keep its consumer inflation forecast unchanged at 1.5 to 2.5 percent in 2007, Karun said.

The August figure came as a surprise to economists who had expected inflation to edge up to 1.8 percent due to rising food prices.

Vegetable prices in August jumped 23.5 percent with rice prices up 8.9 percent, the ministry said.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose just 0.7 percent from a year ago.

With inflation staying low, Pimonwan Mahujchariyavong, an economist at private think tank Kasikorn Research Centre, said the central bank should cut its key interest rate to spur the country's slowing economy.

'It's time for the Bank of Thailand to rethink its interest rate policy to boost economic development,' she said.

The Thai central bank last month left its key interest rate unchanged at 3.25 percent, amid easing inflation despite calls from the business sector for a rate cut to help shore up the economy.

Thailand's economy is expected to grow at just over four percent in 2007, which would be one of the lowest projected rates for Southeast Asia.

Thailand's inflation rises to 2.1 percent in September

BANGKOK (ThomsonFinancial) - Thailand's inflation rate rose 2.1 percent in September from the year earlier, pushed up by a spike in food prices and rising fuel costs, the Commerce Ministry said Monday.

The September figure was higher than the market's forecast of 1.8 percent as vegetable prices jumped 20 percent and oil prices grew 6.9 percent in the month, the ministry said.

It was a sharp rise from August when inflation eased to 1.1 percent year-on-year, the lowest in nearly five years, but the ministry said it would keep its inflation forecast unchanged at 1.5 to 2.5 percent in 2007.

'Even oil prices rose sharply, the inflation level remained in line with our projection for the whole year,' Siriphol Yodmuangcharoen, the ministry's permanent secretary general, told reporters.

Energy costs rose 3.6 percent year-on-year in September while rice prices increased 8.2 percent, the ministry said.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, edged up 0.8 percent.

Charl Kengchon, a senior economist at private think tank Kasikorn Research Centre, said a spike in inflation would likely prompt the Bank of Thailand to leave its key interest rate unchanged at its policy meeting on October 10.

'As current high oil prices are to become more volatile in the winter, the central bank may decide to keep the interest rate unchanged for the time being,' Charl said.

The central bank maintained its key interest rate at 3.25 percent in August despite calls from local business leaders for a rate cut in a bid to spur a slowing economy.

Thailand's economy is expected to grow just over four percent in 2007, ranking among the lowest in Southeast Asia.

Thailand's inflation rises to 2.5 percent in October

BANGKOK (Thomson Financial) - Thailand's inflation rate in October rose to 2.5 percent from a year earlier due to a spike in energy costs and rising food prices, the Commerce Ministry said Thursday.

The October figure was in line with the market's forecast and was up from September's inflation figure of 2.1 percent.

'A sharp rise in oil prices was the major factor pushing up inflation,' said an official.

Energy prices in October jumped 15.6 percent from the year before and transportation costs increased 5.8 percent, while overall food prices also rose 2.6 percent, the ministry said.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 1.0 percent.

World oil prices barreled through new records of more than 96 dollars per barrel in Asian trade Thursday, and analysts warned Thailand's inflation could climb to the 3.0 percent level.

But the ministry said it would keep its inflation forecast this year unchanged at 2.0 to 2.5 percent.

Thailand's inflation at 9.2 per cent in July, a ten-year high

Bangkok - Thailand's inflation in July rose to 9.2 per cent year-on-year, the highest rate in a decade, the commerce ministry announced Friday.

Pairoh Sudsawang, Permanent Secretary for Commerce, said the Consumer Price Index in July was up 9.2 per cent compared with July, 2007, and up 0.3 per cent compared with last month's rate.

In June, inflation rose to 8.9 per cent, year-on-year, while in

May it was 7.6 per cent.

Despite the steady rise over the past three months, Pairoh projected that the rate for all of 2008 will be about 6.6 per cent.

With international oil prices now on a gradual decline, Thailand's inflation rate is expected to lessen in August, the Kasikorn Research Centre (KCR) said.

KCR, an economic think tank, projected Thailand's inflation rate for the entire year at 7.2 per cent.
