Thailand Sets Up Radioactive-Screening Point At Airport

BANGKOK, March 17 (Bernama) -- Thai Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit has opened a radioactive-screening point for passengers travelling to and from Japan at Thailand's main Suvarnabhumi International Airport although there have been no reports of passengers being contaminated with radiation so far, Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.

Jurin said on Thursday that his ministry has arranged teams of doctors and nurses from Rajavithi Hospital to station at Suvarnabhumi Airport's passenger passport control checkpoints both for arrivals and departures, and that Thai medical staff will distribute tablets of potassium iodide or iodine for passengers travelling to Tokyo and northern Japanese areas at risk of radiation exposure.

The Thai health minister revealed that the tablets will also be distributed at Thailand's Phuket International Airport and Chiang Mai International Airport and his ministry will deliver 500 iodine tablets to Thai staff operating in Japan as well.

According to the Thai health minister, as of March 16, there had been no reports on passengers contaminated with radiation, including those who arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport after Tuesday midnight.
