THAI/UK EXTRADITION TREATY

Ungelesener Beitragvon Naam Jai (?2008) » Do Aug 16, 2007 2:30 pm

"We have an extradition treaty with Britain" says Interim Prime Minister Surayad Chulanont, so it will be interesting to see if PM Gordon Brown honours it, which of course,he would expect, if the "boot was on the other foot"
Corruption is a very serious matter but is it serious enough for the Labour Government, embroiled in its own "cash for Honours" scandal to hand Thaksin over.
That does not mean asking him politely to leave the UK. It means arresting him and holding him under arrest until the Thai Police can "escort" him home.
Thaksin and his wife failed to show up in Court to face corruption charges and are accused of illegally buying property from a Government agency. Thaksin's case involves a "conflict of interest" in a land deal while in power.

The Thai Government says "they will do everything in their power" to get him back.

Whether you think he was a decent bloke or not and whether you think he was a good leader or not, he has serious legal charges to answer to his countrymen and women. One way to improve our "only tolerated image here" would be to ask permission from the Thai Authorities to hold a peaceful demonstration outside the British Embassy demanding Britain extradite Thaksin. While we were at it we could say a few choice words about what we think of the British Embassy and it service to Brits.

Much has been said recently about the moral unfitness of Thai Ex Premier Thaksin to own Manchester City Football Club.and the emergence of these super rich bosses arriving in the UK to swallow up football clubs with no links to the industry that they buy into, backed by endless private wealth. This is not good for Britain's image abroad, especially when they are ill-gotten gains. If Thaksin's politics don't make you throw up, perhaps the fact that he has tainted the "good" name of the English game of football, might stimulate you into action?.

Do you think it worth to change the image from "excessively drunk brawlers" to "opportunist idiots"? It is not Thaksin's refuge in Britain that has people thinking about how welcome Brits should be. Didn't you hear about how welcome british tourists are at the Mediterranean by now? Taking the freedom in foreign countries that would land them in jail back home . . .

And now helping a foreign criminal with a lot of money to keep from getting prosecuted isn't good for that image either. But repeating "We are powerless, the politician's do what they want anyway" and lift the mug for another cheers is a lot easier . . .

Thank you for your comments.
What would other Issan Expat residents say to your comment about them being drunken sots?
We may be "tolerated" but you can be sure, our worth and efforts, is noted by authority in Issan,by those making a contribution, financially or by their work as teachers or businessmen.
Don't be too sure that the Thai Cabinet don't read the letters page of the Bangkok Post too. They know the returns that come from the Immigration department too.
Any Government that doesn't listen to the people is a fool. And we ARE the people.
Turning a blind eye to world events, political or sporting, and particularly in your own country, if it is Britain, does not make for stimulating company.
And more stimulating company does make life more interesting, wouldn't you agree?
